Kia Ora is an organic kiwi brand from New Zealand. I worked on a team with packaging designers, an industrial designer, and another graphic designer to create the branding and packaging for Kia Ora. As a team, we divided the work according to our strengths to work more efficiently. I created the patterns and illustrations, helped with the logo and branding, designed the layout, took the final photos, and designed additional brand merchandise.
Kia Ora's package is made of 100% paperboard with no glue or adhesive, meaning it is fully recyclable in an industry saturated with plastic packaging. Kia Ora's packaging is designed to be easily stacked for in-store displays and shipping. The durable hexagon box contains six kiwis.
Kia Ora's packaging has windows and an easy open and close to allow the customer to see the kiwis before purchasing. Kia Ora donates 5% of their profits to Save the Kiwi, an organization committed to protecting New Zealand's native kiwi bird. When opened, the inside of the package reveals information about Kia Ora's kiwis, sustainability, and mission to protect the kiwi birds.
Because Kia Ora's kiwis are from New Zealand, the patterns I created are inspired by the native Maori tribal tattoos. The swirls in the logo relate to the Maori tattoo patterns, and we included a kiwi bird in the logo because Kia Ora donates 5% of their profits to protect the native kiwi birds. We used bright tropical colors because of New Zealand's tropical climate and the distinct bright green color of kiwis. We used Poppins for the typography because it is friendly, modern, and simple so it does not compete with the logo or patterns.
I created merchandise that Kia Ora uses to foster a large brand following. These products are easily recognized as Kia Ora's with their bright kiwi green and distinct Maori tattoo patterns. Kia Ora's merchandise includes shirts, hoodies, hats, bags, stickers, and tape. Kia Ora donates 5% of their merchandise profits to Save the Kiwi organization.
